Caveat: a systematic flaw has been uncovered in the BMI assessment system. Because a given volume of muscle tissue has the same weight as fat, if an individual has a lot of muscle mass, he or she will be incorrectly evaluated as overweight or obese. In a case like this, it is necessary to perform a comparatively complex procedure that determines the ratio of body muscle to body fat.

In the simplest terms, if you are an athletic individual, if you have a lot of muscle tissue, the BMI calculation will probably not deliver an accurate result.

Explanation

In 1995, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the American Health Foundation issued new guidelines that defines healthy weight as a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 25. In a recent study, 59% of Americans exceeded this weight.

There are many adverse health effects that accompany obesity, the most common being high blood pressure, but including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and an increased risk of death from all causes.

The Body Mass Index is equal to one's weight in kilograms divided by the square of one's height in meters, or BMI = W / (H * H). A maximum healthy weight (based on a BMI of 25) is equal to 25 times the square of one's height in meters, or 25 * H * H.

BMI Categories

  • Underweight (less than 18.5)
  • Normal (18.5 to 24.9)
  • Overweight (25 to 29.9)
  • Obesity class I (30 to 34.9)
  • Obesity class 2 (35 to 39.9)
  • Obesity class 3 (greater than 40)
